The recent enhancement of the Launch Terminals’s entry fees all over the country has dissatisfied the poor section of the people who go to the terminals to bid good bye to their relatives and friends who choose launch as mode of transport.
The BIWTA raised the entry fee to Tk 10. Previously the entry fee was Tk five.
According to BIWTA office sources, the decision to increase entrance fee was taken with the approval of Finance Ministry. The launch travellers and their attendants, however, have demanded cancellation of order.
One passenger on the way to Patuakhali named Madhob Chandro said that increase of fee is one kind of oppression for poor passengers like us. It’s totally illogical.
Entrance fee of Tk 10 is really a burden for the lower income class to pay. So we request the government to revert the decision in the interest of passengers, he added.
Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Deputy Director of Dhaka River Port, said that the decision to increase fee had been taken by the order of Finance Ministry. Besides, Tk two from the entrance fee of Tk 10 will be spent for the welfare of common passengers.
While talking, Commodore Mohammad Mahbub-ul Islam, Chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said that the tenders for leasing the ports and ferries in the country have not been invited as yet.
“But, the tenders for leasing the seaports and the ferry ghats have been invited, However, the new fee will be effective from next year.”
The BIWTA Chairman said also that in addition to the passenger entrance fee at the launch terminal, tax rates will be increased in 18 sectors. It is to be mentioned that Additional Fee for vehicles at the both Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia-Kathalbari ferry ghats will be effective.
The entry fee into the Terminal buildings of Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Khulna, Chandpur, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barguna and Barishal including Sadarghat, the largest river port of the country, had been charged at the rate of Tk 10 from Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Daulatdia, Aricha, Tongi, Ashuganj, Shimulia, Bhairab Bazar, Nagarbari, Char Janazat, Cox’s Bazar, Meghna Ghat and other ghat fees have been increased from Tk 4 to Tk 5. And in case of entry to Wayside launch station, terminal or jetty, it has been increased from Tk 3 to Tk 5.
