Ensuring security to working women stressed

Speakers at a discussion said all the working women should be given security in their job places for the sake of women empowerment alongside boosting local economy.
They viewed the many of the women who go outside for work face repression which is detrimental to their self-reliant besides gross violation of human rights. Time has come to remove the odd situation.
The observation came at a dialogue styled “Safe city, Safe Women” held at the conference hall of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Barendra Unnayan Prochesta (BUP) and Actionaid jointly organized the event where various issues on women repression and gender disparity were discussed elaborately yesterday.
With Nazma Khatun, Ward Councilor of Rajshahi City Corporation, in the chair, Deel Sitara Chuni, Divisional Head of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association, spoke as focal person.
Prof Dr Mahbuba Kaniz Keya from Psychology Department of Rajshahi University, President of Rajshahi Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dilara Amzad, BUP Director Foyzullah Chowdhury and is Programme Coordinator Rashed Ibney Obayed and district unit general secretary of Jatiya Mohila Parishad KolponaRoy, among others, also spoke.
The speakers said there is a need of women-friendly planning to build safe city for the women. Women contribution to the national economy is estimated to be around 42 percent.
Calling for taking the womenfolk forward for overall national uplift the speakers said there’s no alternative to engage the women in all the nation-building process for reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the people in general.
They underscored the need for collective efforts to end all sorts of violence against women for restoring a gender parity based society to take the nation forward.
They mentioned that the government alone or any single organization isn’t capable to free the womenfolk from violence and repression so community participation is very important in this regard.
The women development activists pointed out that the overall national development could not be possible until the womenfolk are educated and ensured all other fundamental rights they deserve.
Various issues like gender discrimination, dowry, child marriage, women empowerment and the role of development and voluntary organizations towards addressing the social curses were discussed in the dialogue.
