BSS, Rajshahi :
Speakers at a discussion underscored the need for concerned efforts of all government and non-government organizations to provide greater access to justice to the poor, marginalized and socially excluded communities everywhere in the society.
They viewed infusing dynamism into the legal aid services could be an
effective means of attaining the cherished goal. Only the judiciary or any other single organization is not capable of ensuring legal aid to the underprivileged people but a comprehensive effort is essential in this regard. Responsive media role is also important for achieving the goal.
The observations came at a daylong advocacy meeting styled “Local Level Access to Justice and Legal Aid” held at Tanore Upazila Parishad Complex conference hall.
Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Trust (BLAST) organized the event in association with Community Legal Services and UKIAD where more than 50 public representatives, government and non-government officials concerned and other stakeholders attended.
Upazila Parishad Chairman Emran Ali Mollah and Vice chairman Bondona Rani Pramanik addressed the programme as chief and special guests respectively with Mustafizur Rahman Khan, President of Shaw Unnayan, in the chair.
Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat, Women Affairs Officer Farida Yeasmin and Deputy Director (Advocacy and Communication) of BLAST Mahabuba Aktar also spoke. Local unit Coordinator Advocate Abdus Samad moderated the discussion.
The discussants observed that entire people are equal to the eye of law so emphasis should be given on bringing all the victimized people under the legal aid coverage whatever and whenever they need.
Giving priority to the legal aid related cases is very important in terms of speedy disposal in the greater interest of the distressed and poor justice-seeking litigants.
The judges, lawyers, police and others concerned should have to work
together along with service-oriented zeal as the government is committed to provide legal aid services to the poor and distressed victims free of cost, they opined.
Importance should be given on bringing close coordination between the works of all the development organizations and judiciary alongside building a network to earn positive result in this regard.
Besides, they emphasized the need for reaching the legal aid activities to the grassroots alongside expediting the services towards the poor and distressed victims for protecting their fundamental human rights.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of coordination among service providers, value of increasing the number of social workers, the importance of gender sensitive public representatives, protection and promotion of human rights victims of crimes.
