Valiant Freedom Fighter and Mayor of Rangpur City Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu called for ensuring cleanliness to free Bangladesh from the curable Filariasis disease.He made the call on Friday while administering Diethylcarbamazine Citrate 120 milligram tablets to a police member at his Guptapara residence in Rangpur to launch the 10-day long mass tablet administering campaign under the National Filariasis Elimination Programme-2014.
The campaign is being conducted with assistance of the Directorate of Health under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Councilors Hafiz Ahmed Chhuttu and Nurunnabi Fulu, representatives of the Civil Surgeon Office and Filariasis Infection Prevention Programme and Health Officer of RCC Abdul Kaiyum addressed the occasion.
The speakers discussed the overall Filariasis situation in Rangpur division, identified reasons behind the spread of the curable disease and elaborated effectiveness of the long-term Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) treatment method.
They said the common people could get rid of the completely curable disease of Filariasis to lead a normal life by reducing mosquito reproduction adopting preventive measures and maintaining hygiene and cleanliness all-around.
They said Filariasis is not a curse or a transmissible one, but, it is caused by bites from its germ carrier mosquitoes, which include four female species of mosquito namely, anopheles, culex, aedes and manosonia. Under the programme, 7,16,900 people in all 33 wards of the city corporation area will be given tablets during the 10-day long campaign till November 30 next.
Children aged between 2-8 years will be given one tablet each, while children aged between 8-12 years will be given two tablets each and children above 12 years age group and adults will get three tablets each. The RCC health workers and volunteers will visit door to door with the tablets from 9 am to 5 pm daily. However, the tablets will not be provided to children under the age of 2, pregnant women and seriously ill people.
