‘Ensure safe food for healthy nation’

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder on Tuesday said safe food would play a very significant role in building a healthy, strong and talented nation.
“The incumbent government is making efforts to build safe food production, processing, preservation; marketing and consumption habits . . . public awareness can make this effort more fruitful and successful,” he told a seminar in a city hotel on Tuesday.
The food minister also called upon the media people to play a vital role in ensuring safe food for the people of the country.
Speaking at a seminar titled “Awareness on Safe Food Act, 2013 and Rules and Regulations and Media in Creating Public Awareness” organized by Safe Food Authority at Intercontinental Grand Ballroom here.
 “Ensuring safe food is now the demand of time. If it is possible to ensure safe food, it will be possible to build a healthy, strong, hardworking and talented population,” the minister observed.
Referring to mobile laboratories throughout the country, Sadhan said the laboratories are being set up for checking food at the upazila level in eight divisions countrywide, which would help people know whether food is safe.
Noting that a large testing laboratory of Asia is being set up in Narayanganj soon with the funding of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), he said this will make it easier to determine the quality of food and issue certificates.
Dhaka University’s Chemistry Department Professor Dr Md Iqbal Rauf Mamun presented the keynote paper at the seminar with Bangladesh Safe Food Authority Chairman Abdul Qayum Sarker in the chair.
The function was addressed, among others, by Food Ministry Secretary Dr Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum, Founder Director and president of Bangladesh Restaurant Owners Association Imran Hasan.
