Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) has underlined the need to ensure people’s rights to cast their votes on the day of the 11th Parliamentary Election scheduled to be held on December 30.
Shujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar said this at a press conference held in the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Sunday.
The Press conference was held under title “Kon Doler kemon istehar,” which is roughly translated as “Election manifestos of various political parties.”
Shujan President and former adviser to a caretaker government Md Hafizuddin Khan and Associate Coordinator Nesar Amin were present, among others, at the function.
Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar said, “People’s right to vote should be the utmost priority of the national polls. Protecting voting rights will mean that the political parties will become accountable for their failures to the people after five years.”
“Protecting voting rights will mean that the winning political party will remain sincere in realizing their election pledges given in their manifesto.”
Responding to query by reporters, Dr Badiul said, “An inclusive election is not always a fair election. An election will be fair if people are able
to vote for their chosen candidate.”
“We are optimistic that every election official and personnel concerned will be sincere in performing their duties, so that the people can get their guarantee to vote.”
M Hafizuddin Khan said, “The people’s trust on the current Election Commission is a bit low, arising from the incidents of recent attacks on opposition candidates.
“However, I am optimistic that the situation will improve significantly after the Bangladesh Army takes to the street. We want the rule of democracy and good governance in the country. To make it possible, a fair election must be organized.”
Nesar Amin said, every political party showed proper respect to the spirit and ideology of 1971 Liberation War, which is remarkable.
“The political parties despite key differences have agreed on some points, such as unity, decentralization, promises of abolishing inequality and friendly policies towards marginalized and neglected communities” he added.
