THE results of this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations under country’s 10 education boards were announced yesterday where the combined pass rate rose by 7. 29 percent – that means it’s now 73.93 per cent from last year’s 66.64 per cent. The number of GPA-5 achievers in the 10 boards is 47,286 which was 29,262 last year. This year the pass rates of both the girls and boys have gone up. But there is another thing which is highly appreciating. This year girls have outshined the boys in HSC exams. Newspaper reports said the girls’ pass rate under the 10 education boards is 76.44 per cent while the pass rate of boys is 71.67 per cent. Out of 7,03,000 male students who appeared in the exams, 5,03,828 passed, while 4,83,344 female students, among 6,33,629 candidates, passed this year. The girls’ pass rate of all education boards is 69.72 per cent while the pass rate of boys is 63.88 percent.
We like to congratulate the students for their excellent performance in the HSC examination. Those who couldn’t pass the exam – we hope they will not be disheartened and take preparations to appear in the exams next year. What’s most encouraging is that a remarkable number of students have passed HSC this year despite of a dropout tendency of many others. A total of 38.3 percent students in secondary level dropped out in 2016, which was around two percent lower than that of the previous year. According to the report of Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics the dropout rate was 40.29 percent in 2015. The dropout rate among girls in HSC level was 42.19 percent and among boys was 33.80 percent in 2016. The rates were 45.92 percent and 33.72 percent respectively in 2015.
There are more problems, more obstacles for the students. A large number of students will have to fight to get a chance in a reputed college or university for graduation course. Of them, the meritorious students will fight to get admission in medical or engineering colleges and such institutions. We must say, increasing number of pass rate would not bring any good, if the government could not ensure higher educational facilities for all of them.
