President M Abdul Hamid on Tuesday asked the authorities concerned, particularly the fisheries and livestock ministry, to take pragmatic steps to ensure safe fisheries production and continue its export.
“Remain alert against adulteration in fish production . . . as harmful chemicals are being used in the production of fish feed,” he said at a function at Bangabhaban here marking the ‘National Fisheries Week-2018.’
Terming the fisheries sector a very important sector for employment, the President categorically asked the concerned ministry to increase the production of local fish varieties and oversee the overall situation of fisheries sector, President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.
“Production of local fishes in many areas including haor region is decreasing to a large extent and some varieties of local fishes are facing extinction. So, we must take steps to encourage the fishermen to cultivate and preserve different varieties of local fish,” the President said.
Later, the President released 316 kgs of fish fries in Danadighi Pond inside Bangabhaban. At total of 4120 pieces of rui, katla, mrigel, chitol, pabda and gulsa fries were released in the pond.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda, high officials of ministries and secretaries concerned of Bangabhaban were present on the occasion.
