The holy Eid-ul-Azha, the 2nd largest religious festival of the Muslim community will be celebrated throughout the country on August 12.
On this occasion, about 11.18 million cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep may be sacrificed.
For sale of cattle, the City Corporation and the government have taken steps for ensuring foolproof security of cattle markets.
This was disclosed recently at an Inter-Ministerial meeting held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, chaired by State Minister Ashraf Ali Khan.
Makeshift cattle markets will be set up at 25 places in the capital ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.
The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will set up 14 cattle markets, while the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) 11 cattle markets, officials said.
The DSCC and DNCC authorities have asked cattle traders to start selling animals from three days before the Eid festival and to continue till the Eid day.
Lease of 11 cattle markets out of 14 has been completed by the DSCC while lease of 11 cattle markets by the DNCC, sources said.
Due to a demarcation dispute, both the city corporations have invited tender for Aftabnagar cattle market.
DNCC Chief Estate Officer Aminul Islam said, they have completed tender process all of the cattle markets except Aftabnagar cattle market.
About 4.58 million cows and buffaloes, 7.20 million goats and sheep, and a large number of other sacrificial animals will be slaughtered; Department Of Livestock Services (DLS) confirmed the figure at the meeting, as quoted by a press release from the Ministry recently.
Officials at the meeting said, Bangladesh has attained self-sufficiency in meat production which has significantly reduced cattle import and entry of sacrificial animals from neighbouring India and Myanmar.
Earlier, the number of illegal entry of Indian cows was 2.4 to 2.5 million annually. But 92,000 cows only entered Bangladesh in 2018.
The cattle markets under the DSCC are Meradia Bazar Playground, open spaces of Dhupkhola playground, 41 No. Kawarteck playground, open spaces of Amulia Model Town, Aftabnagar Eastern Housing Dawkandi Endulia, Maitree Shangho playground, Shyampur Balur Math, 32 No. Shamsabad playground, Hazaribagh field at Zigatola, Lalbagh Rahmatganj playground, Chairman’s house intersection in Kamrangirchar, Gopibagh Balur Math & open spaces adjacent to Kamalapur Stadium and open space of Shanir Akhra-Daniya playground.
The cattle markets under the DNCC are open spaces at Kawla-Shialdanga, Uttara-10 No. Sector Sluice gate to Kamarpara Bridge, open spaces on the north side of Mirpur DOHS, Open spaces of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, open spaces of Sahidnagar Housing in Uttarkhan, Badda Eastern Housing (Aftabnagar), open space of Eastern Housing at Mirpur- 6, Khilkhet Banorupa Residential Project, open space near the bridge No 1 & 2 at Uttara Sector 15, Bhatara (Sayed Nagar), Mohammadpur Intellectual Road adjacent open spaces, and open spaces of both side on 300 feet road of Khilkhet.
There will be two veterinary teams available for each at all 24 cattle-markets in and around the capital to be arranged for this year. Of them 14 are expected to be under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 11 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Departments concerned will also work with the Livestock Department and city corporations to prevent cow fattening using steroid and hormone injections in an effort to encourage a healthy fattening process.
The Ministry will seek support from the Dhaka North and Dhaka South City corporations to ensure that the animals are slaughtered at designated places and that the waste is disposed of properly.
