Enhance fruit production for nutrition, self-reliance

Speakers at the inaugural ceremony of a fruit tree fair have stressed for enhancing production of all variety fruits to meet nutritional demand and attaining economic self-reliance through alleviate poverty.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Jaldhaka upazila administration have been jointly organising the three-day Fruit Tree Fair- 2015 at Jaldhaka upazila parishad premises in Nilphamari since Sunday afternoon.
Member of the Parliament from Nilphamari-3 constituency and valiant freedom fighter Professor Golam Mostafa and inaugurated the fair as the chief guest with Jaldhaka Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hassan Habib in the chair.
Jaldhaka Upazila Vice-chairman of Abdul Wahed Bahadur attended the inaugural ceremony as the special guest.
Mayor of Jaldhaka pourashava Elias Hossain Bablu, Upazila Agriculture Officer Jafar Iqbal and Awami League leader Abul Kalam Azad also spoke.
Upazila level officials of the DAE, different agriculture related departments, institutions and research organisations, NGOs, nursery owners, students, youths and farmers, local elite and people from all walks in the society were present.
Different government and non-government organisations and private sector nursery owners set up stalls displaying varieties of indigenous and high yield variety fruit and saplings of fruit- bearing saplings on the fair ground.
The speakers stressed for enhancing production of fruits, including local, indigenous and high yielding varieties, with other crops adopting intercropping methods by imparting necessary training and providing the latest technologies to the growers.
Referring to the prospects of fruit production in rural areas, they suggested for bringing all stakeholders into an integrated approach to enhance production of indigenous, high yielding and hybrid variety and high-priced fruits to earn more profits.
The chief guest called for planting all varieties of fruit, timber and medicinal plants everywhere, including homesteads, to also improve environment for saving the country from natural catastrophes as a result of adverse impacts of climate change.
He suggested the experts to innovate more high yielding and hybrid varieties of fruits aiming at increasing productions round the year for achieving self-reliance by the rural people after meeting nutritional demand for the growing population.
