English signboards yet to be removed despite court’s order

Defying the directives of the higher court and the official orders of Chittagong City Corporation, the English signs, hoardings yet to be removed in city areas. Different quarters in city blamed the city corporation not executing the orders of the removal of English signs and negligence towards implementation of their directives.
Mentionable that city corporation realizes huge taxes from the signboard owners every year with iron hand but the matter of removing the English signboards not rigid, conscious circles sources said.
It is learnt following the verdict against the writ filed before the high court in February, 2014, the order for removing the English signboards was passed to all city corporation, pourashava and cantonment boards by Public Administration Ministry in May in same year.
 Lastly in January, 2016 concerned ministry informed the matter to Local Govt Ministry. In the month of International Mother Language day , discussions about the English signboard intensified than before and CCC directed all signboard, billboards, bell sign owners to remove these controversial signboards within this current month through notification in newspapers. Since the directives of the CCC ,no positive actions yet to be taken the concerned signboard owners .
Our correspondent sources said the signboards/ hoardings of different hospitals, real estate companies, private schools, colleges and commercial firms written with English alphabet are visible in Chowkbazar, Pabartak Crossing, Agrabad and major intersections of the city. While contacted Secretary of the City Corporation Abul Hossain said Revenue section of the corporation was informed to take action in this regard with proper monitoring and any defiance to the orders will be dealt seriously.
