England were set a stiff target of 319 to win the second Test against India on the fourth day at Lord’s on Sunday.
India in their second innings were bowled out for 342, with opener Murali Vijay making 95 following his 146 in the drawn first Test at Trent Bridge last week.
Ravindra Jadeja followed up with 68 while tailender Bhuvneshwar Kumar made 52 — his third fifty in four innings this series.
Seam bowlers Ben Stokes and Liam Plunkett took three wickets each.
England have only thrice scored in excess of 300 in the fourth innings to win a Test — most recently when they made 315 for four against Australia at Leeds in 2001.
