England, after losing the toss, were bowled out for 389 on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on Friday.
The hosts lost their final three wickets for 35 runs after resuming on 354 for seven.
Left-arm paceman Trent Boult took four wickets for 79 runs in 29 overs, including a spell on Friday of two for nine in five overs.
Test debutant Matt Henry ended the innings with just his fifth ball on Friday, an excellent one-handed caught and bowled dismissal getting rid of last man James Anderson.
Fast bowler Henry took four for 93 in 24.5 overs.
England debutant Mark Wood was eight not out.
Moeen Ali, 49 not out overnight, went on to make 58 before he was caught behind off Boult.
Having collapsed to 30 for four on the first morning, England were indebted on Thursday to Joe Root (98) an Ben Stokes (92), who put on 161 for the fifth wicket.
Jos Buttler (67) and Ali then added 103 before the wicket-keeper was lbw to Boult off the last ball of Thursday’s play.
This is the first of a two-Test series.
