Speakers at a seminar here on Thursday laid emphasis on making the best use of the country’s huge young population for enhancing productivity in manufacturing and service sectors to help boost the economy further.
They called for proper steps to provide adequate training to the young population and engage them in boosting productivity as productivity is the key to economic development.
Around 70 percent of the country’s total population is below the age of 40 which is a big advantage for Bangladesh, they observed.
National Productivity Organisation (NPO) under the Industries Ministry arranged the seminar, titled ‘Increase Productivity for Sustainable Development’ at Cridap auditorium in the city.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu attended the seminar as the chief guest while President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed spoke as a special guest.
Registrar of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) Prof Dr AKM Masud presented the keynote paper in the seminar, chaired by Industries Secretary M Moinuddin Abdullah.
NPO Director Dr M Nazrul Islam and Joint Director Abdul Baqui Chowdhury also took part in the discussion.
Speaking as the chief guest, Amu said enhanced productivity is an outcome of coordinated efforts and laid emphasis on active participation of producers, managers, workers and employees for better production.
“Joint efforts will help enhance productivity at national level and improve the quality of products,” he added.
The Industries Minister also said the process of reopening closed mills and factories would continue for creating more employments and improve the living standards of workers. “A good number of closed mills and factories were reopened in the previous term of the present government. This trend will continue,” Amu said.
FBCCI president Akram Uddin said country’s huge youths are a big advantage for Bangladesh who can play a significant role in boosting productivity in industrial units and other sectors, including the agriculture sector.
He laid emphasis on proper training and education for the young population of the country so that they could be used in the process of boosting productivity.
Earlier, NPO brought out a colorful rally in the city marking the National Productivity Day 2014.
The rally, started from Osmani Memorial Auditorium, terminated in front of the Jaitya Press Club via Abdul Gani Road in the city.
Additional Industries Secretary Sushen Chandra Das, Bangladesh Institute of Management (BIM) Director General Khondkar Rakibur Rahman, Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) Director General M Abu Abdullah and officials and employees of the NPO and the Industries Ministry took part in the rally.
