Kalai upazila of Joypurhat has been known as Barind land for rice and potato production since ancient times. However, Enamul Haque, a sharecropper from Bahutidargapara in the upazila, has opened the door to the success of cultivating yellow watermelon of Golden Crown variety of Taiwan for the first time in a new way. Many farmers in the area have expressed interest in cultivating this new variety of watermelon.
It has been seen on the spot that Bahutidargapara of Udaipur Union is about 12 km north of Kalai Sadar. Enamul Haque, a sharecropper from Epara, started commercial cultivation of yellow watermelon of the Golden Crown variety of foreign Taiwan on flood-free and high ground in the 33rd century on his own initiative. Generally, the weather from February to April is said to be suitable for watermelon cultivation. But as it is a warm region, juicy fruit watermelon is not cultivated anywhere in this upazila.
Even after this, Enamul Haque has written his name in the register of successful farmers by cultivating watermelon for the first time in Kalai known as Barind land. He planted about 1,300 foreign Taiwanese Golden Crown yellow watermelon seeds on his land on June 24 in a modern way.
Hundreds of his desired small and big watermelons are hanging on the tops of the trees on the platform and swaying in the wind. Watermelons, which free from toxins and formalin-free nutrients, are yellow in color, taste good, attractive to look at and in high demand, because of their good prices and profitability.
Enamul Haque, a sharecropper from Bahutidargapara of the upazila, said, “I have covered 33 acres of land with mulching paper to maintain proper soil moisture by making 22 beds there as per the advice of the Upazila Agriculture Office.” Then on June 22nd, 16 inches after the foreign Taiwan’s Golden Crown I planted yellow watermelon seeds of the variety. Within 35 days of sowing the seeds, the tree rises to the stage. Within 40 days the tree bears many flowers and twigs. Then after maturing for 75 days, about 2400 watermelons weighing 2.5 to 3 kg are hanging on the floor.
Cut the watermelon into red tuktuke inside, juicy and sweet to eat and very good-tasting. He added that he hopes all watermelons will be sold this month. Demand for this specialty has grown significantly as a result of recent corporate scandals. Each watermelon will sell for an average of 100 rupees. So far it has cost about 22 thousand rupees. Excluding all the expenses, my income will be around 2 lakh 15 thousand rupees. Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Nusrat Jahan Zeba said farmers in the upazila are more interested in cultivating paddy and potatoes. In addition to the cultivation of rice and potatoes, we have created a modern watermelon cultivation in the area in an effort to make more profit by cultivating many types of fruits.
