Zimbabwe’s bowlers proved more incisive but continued to bleed runs as New Zealand’s score mounted on the second day of the second Test on Sunday.
While New Zealand had it all their way on the first day, when they racked up 329 for two on the back of Tom Latham’s century, Mike Chinouya and Graeme Cremer both picked up early wickets on the second morning for Zimbabwe.
New Zealand still managed to add 107 runs in the morning session, with Kane Williamson reaching his ton, to go to lunch on 436 for four.
Williamson, who began the day on 95,became the first New Zealander to score centuries against all of the other nine Test nations.
He was also the youngest of the 13 Test batsmen to achieve the feat, and did it in fewer matches and innings than anyone else.
The New Zealand captain then departed in disappointing fashion, when he guided a wide Chinouya delivery straight to gully to fall for 113.
Henry Nicholls was the other batsman dismissed in the opening session, as he misjudged the length of a Cremer delivery and was trapped lbw whilst trying to sweep.
Ross Taylor batted through the morning session to reach lunch on 50 not out from just 73 balls, while BJ Watling was unbeaten on 18.
