People of all classes in Nariya of the district on Wednesday staged a day-long hunger strike to demand an embankment be built for their upazila to cope with river erosion.
Locals including students, businessmen, politicians, social organisations as well as thousands of people from the breakdown areas joined the strike at the Shahid Minar premises in front of the Naria Upazila Health Complex around 10am and continued till 5pm, said the organizers.
In the last two years, more than 10,000 people in Nariya lost their homes to river erosion, while at least seven educational institutes, 15 madrasahs, three markets and more than 300 business organizations were swept away by the river.
Even in the closing period of the Monsoon, river erosion is still happening in nearby areas of the Padma in Nariya risking the Upazila Health Complex, Nariya Municipality Building and many more infrastructures.
