Bagerhat Correspondent : A vast tract of land was inundated with water in the village Dumuria within Sadar Union Parishad under Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat district when the flood control embankment constructed on the bank of the river Chitra was broken due to the sudden onrush of the tidal surge on Friday noon.As a result, dwellers of more than 150 dwelling houses were marooned and more than 50 lobster and shrimp farms were washed away. Bikash Barai, Shankar Mondol, Paritos Gharami and some other inhabitants of the village Dumuria disclosed to the newsmen on Friday noon the flood control embankment on the bank of the river Chitra was suddenly broken on some points due to the heavy rush of sea water. The locals tried their best to repair the broken embankment, but in vain due to the incessant rains. They apprehend that if the broken embankment is not repaired immediately more areas might be inundated with the onrush of the sea water and will damage to the standing crops and shrimps and lobster farms.Md. Anwar Parvez, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Chitalmari disclosed, steps were already taken by the concerned authorities to repair the broken flood protection embankment.It may be mentioned here that during the corresponding period in the last year the same embankment was broken due to the onrush of the water of the high tide accompanied with torrential and incessant rains. As a result, a number of villages including Dumuria within the same Union were inundated with water and caused a huge damage to the standing crops and fish (lobsters and shrimps), the main cash crops of Chitalmari Upazila.
