Prevention of repression and violence against women has become an essence of the time to eliminate gender discrimination and ensure equal rights of the women and their empowerment.
The opinion came yesterday at a post-rally human chain programme arranged in observance of the International Women Repression Prevention Fortnight- 2016 at Katchari Bazar zero point in Rangpur.
The district administration in association with District Women Affairs Department organised the programme.
Jatiya Mohila Sangstha, LAMB, Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, RDRS Bangladesh, World Vision Bangladesh, BRAC, Eco Social development Organisation, Social Equality for Effective Development (SEED), CARE Bangladesh, The Hunger Project and other organisations extended assistance in arranging the programme.
Earlier, a huge colourful rally, participated by government and NGO officials and employees, women, human rights and sociocultural activists, professionals, teachers, students and elite, was brought out in the city streets.
With District Women Affairs Officer Kawser Parveen in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Anwar attended the post-rally human chain programme as the chief guest.
Additional District Magistrate Maruf Hassan, District Coordinator of The Hunger Project Rajesh Dey Raju, Executive Director of SEED Sarothi Rani Saha and women rights activist of RDRS Bangladesh Somse Ara Bilkis, addressed as special guests.
The chief guest called for ensuring enhanced participation of the womenfolk, half of the country’s total population, in all development and sociopolitical activities in the process of building a middle income Bangladesh by 2021 and developed country by 2041.
Rajesh Dey Raju said the desired socioeconomic uplift would not be achieved for building a sustainably developed country without ending repression against women to ensure their equal rights, dignity and honour at every sphere in the society.
Kawser Parveen laid emphasis on creating awareness through changing social mindset toward the womenfolk from every family to launch a vigorous social movement for eliminating all types of repression and violence against women.
The speakers narrated the present situation about repression and violence against women and stressed on comprehensive efforts of all stakeholders, including GO-NGOs, civil society and common people to root out these social curses.
