An Indian wild elephant killed two persons on the spot and injured two others by stampeding in the Sadupara and Choklangura bordering areas under Durgapur upazila in Netrakona district on Thursday.
The elephant also damaged dwelling houses, standing Boro crops and vegetables.
Police and witnesses said, the deceased have been identified as Shibu Pandey, 40, from Sadupara and Taheruddin, 70, from Choklangura.
The injured persons have been identified as Gita Rani,55, and Abdur Rahim,, 54, who were admitted to the Durgapur Upazila Health Complex,
sources said. The elephants also damaged over a dozen of residential houses, standing Boro crops and vegetables on a vast tact of land in the areas.
When contacted, Second Officer of Durgapur Police Station Saidur Rahman said that a police team from Durgapur rushed to the spot and brought the wild elephants under control by opening gunfire in the air.
“Police fired 16 rounds of bullets for saving the lives of the local people and their properties”, the police officer said, adding that the elephant was injured in the firing and later died, the police officer said.
