A speedy northwester with rain and lightening lashed Barisal city, surrounding areas and different parts of the region on Wednesday morning causing disruption of telecommunication, power, and water supply for hours.
The adverese weather also damaged a huge number of makeshift houses, slums, trees in the affected areas.
Five were injured by thunder bolt at Kashipur of the city, Babugang and Banaripara upazilas during the storm. Milon Haoladar, senior observer at Barisal met office said the nor’wester hit the region at 5:40 AM and continued till 6:20 AM with gusty wind-speed of 65 kilometers per hour and 15 millimeter rain fall recorded within this time.
 Falling trees on different power supply and telephone lines caused disruption of electrify and water supply and telecommunication connectivity at different part of the city for 6 hours till 4:00 PM Wednesday. About 50 trees and 10 houses , two electricity posts in the Barisal city fall down during the nor’weaster caused disruption of electricity in all of the 22 feeder areas of the city. Supply of electricity started to resume from 11:00 AM and fully restored in the city after 4:00 PM, said Amzad Hossain, executive ingineer of Barisal division-2 under West Zone Power Distribution Company.
Damages of tin-shed structures, makeshift houses , shanties and slums were caused by the storm at Port Road, Kashipur, Lakutia, Rupatali, Naathullabad, B M College areas in the city, said district relief and rehabilitation officer. Water logging on roads remained for about one hours in different areas due to faulty and insufficient drainage and sewerage system.
 Water supply disrupted as the pump houses failed to get power supply, said Anisur Rahman, in charge of Barisal City Corporation water supply department.
 Ramendro Nath Baroi, deputy director, department of agriculture extension Barisal office, said as the Nor’wester was without hailstorm in most areas, so it would not affect agriculture and will help boro cultivation.
 Dr. Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman, deputy commissioner of Barisal, said no casualty was reported till this report and upazila nirbahi officers, agriculture and disaster and relief.
Late arrival of monsoon air flow, fluctuations in day and night temperature causing nor’wester in the region. It may cause making river estuaries and sea very rough with high waves, strong tides and gusty winds, said Prodip Kumar, officer of Kalapara weather radar station.
