S. M. Mizanur Rahman :
The newly elected mayors of three city corporations in bifurcated capital Dhaka and Chittagong City Corporations will take oath of office today (Wednesday)
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will administer the oath at Shapla Hall in the Prime Minister’s Office.
Conducted by LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam the newly elected city councillors will take oath today. The elections to three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong were held on April 28.
Three ruling Awami League-backed candidates–Annisul Haque, Sayeed Khokon and AJM Nasir Uddin were elected mayors in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSSC) and Chittagong City Corporations on April 28.
In their electoral pledges they had vowed to work for the betterment of their respective city corporations and discharging their duties keeping people’s interest in mind.
The city dwellers are now faced with severe problems and expecting a comparative livable condition in capital Dhaka and port Chittagong.
Apart from traffic congestion, mosquito menace, want of entertainment spaces, criminal activities, drug peddling and water logging, price hike of essentials and increase in water, electricity, gas rates and house rent are becoming additional burden for them. A very little rise in their earning is offset by rise in the bills of the utility services.
Serajul Islam Choudhury littérateur and professor emeritus of Dhaka University said it is a big challenge for the newly elected mayor and councillors to fulfill their electoral pledges
“The newly elected mayors and councillors would have to ensure smooth traffic system, immediate removal of garbage from the city streets and providing security to the dwellers,” he said.
“I know a city corporation has no authority to ensure security but the newly elected mayors and councilors will to have raise these issues before the government,” he told The New Nation on Tuesday.
