News Desk :
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has said polls are more important than coronavirus pandemic.
“I don’t believe that elections can lead to coronavirus transmission. Rather, election may be one of the 100 reasons for coronavirus transmission,” he said this while talking to journalists following an opinion-sharing meeting related to law and order in the upcoming union parishad elections at Barisal Circuit House auditorium on Saturday afternoon.
The CEC said though elections were held recently in neighbouring West Bengal state of India, Delhi has been infected by Covid-19. No election was held there. Moreover, corona infection did not increase in the United States after the election there, he said.
Elections to 173 unions will be held as scheduled on June 21 in Barishal division. As there has been a single chairman candidate in each of 26 of these unions, they have been elected uncontested. Elections to the member posts in these unions will only be held, he said.
The CEC thanked the officials concerned for organizing the elections despite the Covid-19 situation.
He also directed the administration and law enforcement officials to ensure that the elections were held peacefully in a fair manner and urged the candidates to abide by the EC code of conduct.
Barishal divisional commissioner Saiful Hasan Badal, police commissioner Md Shahabuddin Khan, Range DIG Md Akhtaruzzaman, Election Commission’s joint secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan and zonal election official Md Alauddin spoke at the opinion-sharing meeting.
