The polls in 10 municipalities of nine districts will be held today (Sunday). The two major political parties Awami League and BNP will contest the election mainly.
The voting will begin at 8am and continue till 4pm without any break.
The 10 municipalities are Haragachh in Rangpur, Kaliganj in Jhenidah, Jhalakati, Bhanga in Faridpur, Brahmanbaria and Nangalkot in Comilla, Kabirhat in Noakhali, Sonagazi in Feni, and Chakoria and Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar.
The Election Commission has completed its necessary preparation to arrange the election, Assistant Secretary of the EC Secretariat Rajib Ahsan told the reporters on Saturday.
More than 35 lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise in 176 polling stations of the 10 municipal election.
As many as 42 mayor candidates, including 10 from Awami League and BNP each, are contesting the municipalities.
Besides, 293 candidates are there in the election race for 93 general councillor posts, while 106 other for 31 reserved seats (exclusively for women) in the municipalities.
Earlier on December 30 last, election to 234 municipalities, out of the country’s 323, was held with the participation of 20 political parties.
