An elderly relative of a young girl was beaten to death and several others were injured in Sylhet on Saturday night after they were attacked for protesting against stalking the girl.
The deceased was Jabed Ali, 60, of village Boro Dhirarai under Osmani Nagar upazila in Sylhet.
According to locals, Zakir Hossain, a resident of the village Boro Dhirarai, had been stalking a girl in the neighbourhood for several days. On Saturday, Zakir and the girlÕs relative Jabed locked in an altercation around 8:00pm after Jabed had asked Zakir not to loiter about their house playing loud music on his phone.
Following the altercation, the stalker along with his relatives and accomplices launched an attack on JabedÕs house around 8:30pm. Jabed was left critically injured and five others were wounded when they tried to resist the attackers, locals said.
Osmani Nagar police officer-in-charge Shahid Ullah told that the victim’s body was sent to the SOMCH morgue for a post-mortem examination. Two youth Sohel and Ruhel were arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack, the police officer said on Sunday afternoon, adding that efforts were underway to arrest the main accused, Zakir.
He added that a murder case would be filed after receiving a written complaint in this regard.
