The month-long Ekushey Book Fair 2020 has been deferred by a day February 2 as the Election Commission (EC) on Saturday decided to shift the date of Dhaka North and South City Corporation elections to February 1.
The decision came on Sunday, a day after the Election Commission rescheduled the polls, said Habibullah Siraji, Director General of Bangla Academy.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the Book Fair, the DG said.
The EC last night shifted the Dhaka City Corporation polls date to February 1 in the face of mounting pressure from various quarters as the
previous date, January 30, coincided with Saraswati Puja.
A group of students took to the streets and some went on hunger strike to protest the original voting date that was coinciding with Saraswati Puja, a Hindu festival dedicated to the Goddess of Knowledge.
