UNB, Dhaka :
Amar Ekushey Book Fair has turned out to be a grand meeting place for friends of different age groups, coming from different city neighbourhoods and educational institutions – all in a common pursuit to seek knowledge and spend quality time with pals.
In a great ambience that the Ekushey Book Fair offers, friends greet each other, exchange books as gift and discuss on contemporary literatures.
Visiting the book fair, UNB found some of the groups of different ages in the fair, who are having a great time out seeking refuge from the mundane Dhaka life.
Over 2,349 books made entry into the month-long Amar Ekushey Book Fair till Friday.
Tonmoy Ahmed, a student of the national university, visited the fair with his four friends from different areas and universities.
He said, ‘We cannot roam together nowadays as we no longer reside in the same locality or study in same university. We used to pass our time together during school days, which we miss, a lot these days.”
He added that he visited the fair with the old friends after a long time. “We have checked in our social media together from the book fair. We talked a lot about our favourite writers, poets and other things. It’s a nice and fruitful reunion.”
UNB found some of the groups – students – in their school and college uniforms visiting from stall to stall and buying books, science fictions remaining high on their list of purchase.
Sumaya Binte, one of them, told UNB they visited fair after planning for some days as they were not allowed to visit from the home very easily. “We visited the whole fair today. I feel happy to see the fair…..all of my friends are happy as we have been able to come here together. I like the books of science fiction. So I bought some of the books.”
Children celebrated the Shishu Prohor (special hours for the children) from 11 am to 1 pm on Friday and Saturday.
Parents of the children were excited as their beloved children were satisfied with the warm welcome of the book fair. They said that the special time for the children should be extended and more entertaining. Children can be accustomed to reading books in this way easily, they opined.
Some parents complained of high prices of the books meant for the children. Publishers said the children’s books are bit high in their prices for the illustrations and high-quality papers.
Of all the books hitting the fair each day, books of poetry outnumbered books of all other genres.
