A neighborhood near Cañon City is on pre-evacuation notice Friday night – after a lightning-caused wildfire, burning since Monday, exploded to 700 acres.
People living in 16 homes in the Red Rocks subdivision have been told to be ready to evacuate.
The Eightmile fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management property in the Phantom Canyon area, which is six miles northeast of Cañon City. Because it is burning on property owned by the BLM – firefighters are only working to build an indirect fire line in strategic locations.
Four fire engines are patrolling the area through the night. Several helicopters and planes used to fight the fire will be back on Saturday morning.
Smoke can be seen from as far away as Cañon City, Pueblo and Colorado Springs.
