At least eight people were killed in separate road accidents in Narayanganj and Gopalganj districts on Tuesday.
In Narayanganj, five people were killed when a truck hit an auto-rickshaw on Asian Highway in Rupganj upazila in the morning.
Four of the deceased were identified as Jahangir Akanda, 28, son of late Ismail Akand of Bakshiganj upazola of Jamalpur district, Sifat, 12, son of Kamal Hossain of Matlab upazila in Chandpur, Mahsin Miah, 35, son of Yeasin Ali of Naria upazila in Shariatpur, and Manir Hossain, 35, auto-rickshaw driver and son of Yusuf Mollah of Butbazar area in Gazipur district.
Police said the accident took place around 7:30 am when the Gazipur-bound truck crashed into the Bhulta-bound three-wheeler, leaving four passengers of the auto-rickshaw dead on the spot and two others injured.
The injured were rushed to Rupganj Upazila Health Complex where one of them, an unidentified man, succumbed to his injuries.
Another injured, Tania Begum, 28, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Angered by the accident, locals set fire to the truck and staged demonstrations blocking the highway, suspending traffic for three hours.
Later, police brought the situation under control, said Mahmudul Islam, officer-in-charge of Rupganj Police Station.
In Gopalganj, three persons were killed and another was injured when a covered van while giving side to a human hauler ran them over on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Maksudpur College intersection in Maksudpur upazila in the afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Nur Alam Biswas, son of Shajahan Biswas of Lohachura village, Shariful Mollah, son of Aktar Mollah, and truck helper Rahim Sheikh, son of Amzad Sheikh of Kamlapur village in Maksudpur upazila.
The covered van of Sundarban Courier Service crashed into the four while they were repairing a truck which went out of order, leaving Shariful and Nur Alam dead on the spot and two others injured.
Of the injured, Rahim died on the way to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
