Eight people were held, while an Awami League leader was sent to jail for embezzling vulnerable group development (VGD) OMS rice in Barishal, Gaibandha, Sirajgonj, Mymensingh, Habigonj and Khulna districts.
In Barishal, a mobile court on Friday sentenced Banaripara Upazila AL Vice-President Yusuf Ali to a six-month imprisonment for embezzling government rice.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Sheikh Abdullah Sadid said that they recovered 7,680kg of government rice from a shop around 11am.
Seven intact sacks and 249 empty sacks were found there, which the AL leader confessed to selling government rice by changing the sacks, the UNO added.
The administration has been taking action against people involved in stealing government rice, said Barishal Deputy Commissioner SM Ajiar Rahman, warning of stern action.
In Gaibandha, police recovered 50 sacks of vulnerable group development (VGD) rice, weighing 1,500 kg, from an empty house in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila on Thursday night.
Two people were arrested in this connection, said Md Abdullahil Zamal, Officer-in-Charge of Sundarganj Police Station.
The detainees are Md Mokbul Hossain Bepary (52), Caretaker of the house, and Aynal Mia (35), the OC said.
“On information, a team of police around 10pm raided the house in Domerhaat Nijgram village and found 50 sacks of VGD rice,” said the OC.
Both the detainees admitted that they bought the rice from the beneficiaries of the VGD project.
A case was filed with Sundarganj Police Station against the guilty. They were produced in the court on Friday.
In Sirajganj at least 60 more sacks of government rice were seized in separate operations and three people were arrested on charge of relief rice theft.
The arrested included Bhagbati Union Parishad member Al-Amin Chowdhury alias Palash, Raju Ahmed from village Chandrakona of Khochabari and Akbar Ali.
Asiya Begum, UP member of Bhagbati, fled on hearing the news of the raid.
On Thursday afternoon, villagers broke down the lockdown and staged a demonstration after getting the news about Al-Amin’s arrest following the rice theft.
Meanwhile, Sadar upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Anisur Rahman in three separate operations at night arrested two persons with 45 sacks of rice.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar police station Mohammad Hafizul Islam said that three cases were filed under the Special Powers Act at Sadar Police Station in connection with the theft of rice.
Baghbati UP chairman Jahangir Alam said that the incident regarding Al-Amin was being investigated by the Upazila’s Nirbahi Officer.
In Habigonj, police seized 20 sacks of OMS rice from two battery-powered Easybike from Balla Road in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj on Thursday night.
Officer-in-Charge of Chunarughat Police Station Sheikh Nazmul Haque said that the rice was seized during a police operation based on secret news. Though the rice was official, they were kept in different sacks.
He said, ‘The name of the person who supervised the rice was found. We are trying to catch him and discover the real mystery. ‘
‘Two Easybike drivers are in our custody. They said the rice was brought from Basula in the upazila. The intention was to sell it to a rice trader in the city, ‘he added.
In Khulna, four sacks of rice were recovered from Coira upazila of Khulna. The rice was recovered from the house of Murshid Dhali in Taittalar Char area of Maheshwarpur union in the upazila on Thursday night. At that time, Murshid Dhali was fined Tk 20,000 for keeping government rice.
The mobile court is headed by the Assistant Commissioner (Land). Noor-i-Alam Siddiqui.
“The house was raided on the basis of secret news,” he said. Four sacks of food-friendly rice were recovered. More empty sacks were found in that house. ‘

The rice was recovered from the Kalibari intersection of Ward No 3 of Bokainagar union on Thursday afternoon. A case has been filed against four persons, including a dealer of food-friendly programs, in the evening.
The accused in the case are Mahbubur Rahman Shaheen, Dealer of rice. Rafiq Mia and Mahesh Rajbhar and UP member Swapan Mia of Bokainagar Union.
Gauripur Upazila Executive Officer Sejuti Dhar Rice recovered and confirmed the authenticity of the case.
