Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Saturday inaugurated eight factories at private Meghna Economic Zone (MEZ) and Meghna Industrial Economic Zone (MIEZ) located at Meghnaghat area of Sonargaon in Narayanganj.
Meghna Group of Industries (MGI), owner and developer of the economic zones, launched five new industrial plants at MEZ, the first private economic zone received licence from Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).
The plants are Meghna Pulp and Paper Mills Ltd, Meghna Edible Oils Refinery Ltd, MPP Power Plant Ltd, Sonargaon Flour and Dal Mills Ltd and Tasnim Chemical Complex Unit-2 Ltd.
The remaining three new factories-Meghna Beverage Ltd, Unique Cement Fiber Industries Ltd and Sonargaon Steel Fabricate Ltd-are set up at MIEZ.
Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, railways minister Md. Mazibul Hoque, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Md. Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin), parliament members Shamim Osman, Liyakat Hossain Khoka, principal coordinator for sustainable development goals under Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad, BEZA executive chairman Paban Chowdhury, MGI director Tanzima Mostafa, among others, attended the program.
Meghna Group of Industries chairman and managing director Mostafa Kamal presided over the meeting.
Stressing the importance on setting up more basic industries for the economy, Muhith said the country needs basic industries now to ensure sustainable development.
‘Most of the industries that were set up in the past were linkage establishments but some basic industrial units are now being set up in the country,’ said the finance minister.
Kamal said that the group had so far invested Tk 3,000 crore for the eight new industries in the two economic zones and created employment opportunity for 5,000 people.
He also informed that 10 more industrial plants are being established at the zones.
Moreover, the group is also negotiating with the investors of China, Australia and Germany to set up industrial plants in the zones.
