Staff Reporter :
The demand for gas falls during the Eid vacations, as most of the factories remain shut and city dwellers leave for homes to celebrate the festivals.
Usually the service sector of gas companies undertakes their maintenance work during this vacation to avoid public sufferings.
But the state-owned gas companies failed to utilize this vacation for carrying out their routine maintenance work.
“I fear that any unusual incident may occur in state-owned gas fields due to lack of maintenance. The state-owned gas fields should coordinate with IOC-operated fields for regular maintenance,” said Prof M Tamim.
It would involve a mega planning as well as huge financial involvement, but it is essential to maintain gas field processing plants, he also observed.
The state-owned gas-field companies have failed to do maintenance work during Eid the vacation. But the International Oil Companies (IOCs) make no mistake in this regard.
Three gas fields operated by US-based Chevron Bangladesh Ltd, and Bangura gas field operated by Tallow execute regular maintenance programme during Eid-ul-Azha and Eid-ul-Fitre festivals.
“We have failed to go for major maintenance programme because we need to
meet gas demand during major vacation like Eid. But we are trying to do it shortly,” Petrobangla Director Operation M Quarruzzaman admitted. He said the Bibiyana gas field run by Chevron Bangladesh Ltd has already completed 24 hours maintenance programme at late night on October 7.
The gas field is now supplying 837mmcfd of gas in the grid line, he informed.
The Bibiyana gas field was scheduled for three days maintenance, he said.
Besides, the Tallow-operated Bangura gas field took up four to five days maintenance programme and the field is now supplying 106mmcfd of gas in the grid. Earlier, the gas field went through partial maintenance programme, he said.
