The holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival of the Muslims was celebrated on Tuesday in the port city as elsewhere in the district with due solemnity, fervor and gaiety.
A total of 246 Eid jamaats (congregations), including three big ones, one at MA Aziz Stadium and two successive at Jamiatul Falah Mosque, were held in the city under the auspices of Chittagong Central Eid Jamaat Committee (CCEJC) and Chittagong City Corporation ( CCC) respectively.
A large number of devotees participated in the gatherings and prayed for divine blessing for peace, prosperity and stability of the country as well as the Muslim Ummah.
Sources with the police administration said all Eid-ul-Fitr jamaats in the city and the district were held smoothly and peacefully.
The authorities concerned have taken adequate security measures by deploying RAB, BGB, police and Ansar at various strategic points for maintaining law and order before and after Eid.
Muslim males-octogenarians to juveniles and affluent to destitute, attired in fine or new dresses gathered at their nearest mosques, eidghas, and selected open spaces in the morning and offered the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.
Soon after offering the prayers, people were seen exchanging greetings and embracing each other in the spirit of brotherhood, love and equality.
The lone congregation at M.A. Aziz Stadium was held at 8.30 am while the two successively at Jamiatul Falah Mosque were held at 8.15 am and 9 am.
Other major Eid jamaats were held at Andarkilla Shahi Jame Mosque, Laldhighi Maidan, Parade Maidan, Masjeed-e-Baitus Sharf at Kadamtali , Pologround Railway Public High School Maidan, Shah Amanat Shah (RA)Dargah Maidan, Metropolitan Police Line Maidan, Agrabad Jamboree Field, Baizeed Bostami (Rh) Dargah Mosque, in between 8.30 am and 9 am.
City Mayor Alhaj Monzur Alam Monzu, former Ministers Abdullah Al Noman, Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin, Jafrul Islam Chowdhury, former city mayor and president of Chittagong city Awami League Alhaj A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, BNP city unit Secretary Dr Shahdat Hossain, former Jatiya Party city President Solyman Alam Shet were, among others, elites and politicians in Chittagong who offered Eid-ul- Fitr prayers at Jamiatulfalah Mosque.
Improved diets were served to the inmates of hospitals, jails, orphanages and youth and juveniles centers run by the Social Welfare Department on the occasion.
According to reports reaching here from 14 upazilas of the district, the people in rural areas are also celebrating their Eid festival with huge zeal and enthusiasm.
District administration officials said hundreds of Eid jamaats were held peacefully at mosques, eidghas and selected open spaces in rural areas.
