Amid religious fervour and enthusiasm after a month-long fasting, the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, will be celebrated across the country on Monday if the moon of Shawal month is sighted today (Sunday).
Otherwise, the holy Eid will be celebrated next day (Tuesday).
There would be embraces, smiles and exchange of ‘Eid Mubarak’ among Muslim men and women while celebrating the festival across the country.
But many would not be able to share the joy of the day as at least 37 people were killed in separate road
 accidents in different districts on Saturday. Of them, the lone fatal road accident at Kalabagan Shukanchowki Bazar point on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway under Pirganj upazila claimed 17 homebound garments workers’ lives.
Though three-day public holiday will begin today (Sunday) on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Fitr, most of the people left the city on Friday and Saturday.
President Abul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia issued separate messages greeting the people on the very auspicious occasion.
A meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee will be held today (Sunday) to review the news of moon sighting of the holy month of Shawal and fix the date of Eid-ul-Fitr of 1438 Hijri.
The meeting will be held at the conference room of Islamic Foundation at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at 7.15 pm with Religious Affairs Minister and National Moon Sighting Committee President Principal Matiur Rahman in the chair.
In the capital Dhaka a total of 410 congregations of holy Eid-ul-Fitr would be held this year.
Of those, 230 congregations will be held in Dhaka South City Corporation (BSCC) and 180 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas.
Around 228 Eid congregations will be held in 57 wards under DSCC while 180 in 36 wards under DNCC.
The main Eid congregation will be held at Jatiya Eidgah Maidan, adjacent to the High Court, this year like every year.
Senior Pesh Imam Hafez Maulana Muhammad Mizanur Rahman of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque will conduct the Eid Jamaat at National Eidgah.
Separate arrangements would be made for women at the National Eidgah as around five thousand female devotees may join the congregation. Besides, mobile toilets, medical teams and places of ablution will be arranged.
The venue of the main congregation will be shifted to Baitul Mukarram national mosque at 9:00am in case of inclement weather.
A total of five Eid congregations will be held at Baitul Mukarram national mosque this year.
The 1st congregation will be held at 7:00am, 2nd at 8:00am, 3rd at 9:00am, 4th at 10:00am and the 5th, the last, at 10:45am, said a press release of Islamic Foundation.
Eid Jamaat would be organised at North Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 8 am. Whips of the National Parliament, cabinet members, parliamentarians, officials and staff would take part in the jamaat.
Stringent security measures will be taken around the National Eidgah as the President, cabinet members, judges and diplomats will join the prayers there.
Meanwhile, the entire country including in the capital city has been brought under stringent security measure with deployment of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police for peaceful and smooth celebration of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
“We have taken all possible security measures to ensure security for peaceful celebration of the Eid,” said Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque said on Saturday.
Law enforcers have planned special security measures at the Eidgahs, especially in divisional cities, Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Barisal, Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur.
Against the backdrop of the last year militant attack, the government has taken special security measures at the country’s largest Eidgah, Sholakia, at Kishorreganj with deployment of five platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and a large number of law enforcers to maintain the law and order.
In the city, Dhaka Metropolitan Police will ensure 4-tier security at Jatiya Eidgah on the day of Eid-ul Fitr, installing closed-circuit (CC) cameras and setting up archways at every entry point.
 “All the Musallis (Muslim devotees) will have to go through metal detector and archway scanning to enter the eidgah. Police members in uniform and in plain clothes will be deployed in and around the ground. We have already installed a large number of CC cameras, bringing the ground and its adjacent areas under police surveillance,” said DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah.
On Saturday, braving all sort of odds thousands of people left Dhaka for their respective villages to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their kindred.
The national flag will be hoisted atop government and non-government office buildings on the day.
The main city streets and road islands will be decorated with the national flags and banners inscribed with ‘Eid Mubarak’ in Bangla and Arabic.
National flags and flags inscribed with “Eid Mubarak’ will be installed at important traffic islands and light posts in Dhaka city.
Besides, designated government offices and other establishments would be illuminated on the night following the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private television channels will air special programmes and newspapers publish supplements on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Improved diets will be served in hospitals, jails and orphanages.
