Centering the Eid-Ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religions festivals of the Muslims, Khulna city has been caught by Eid shopping fever with modern and traditional shopping malls bustling with shoppers from all strata. Different types of soft silk Salwars and Kamizs are the most sold shopping items this year. Purchasers are buying cloths even enduring the ongoing heat-wave.
In Khulna city, thousands of people are purchasing items of their won choice with huge enthusiasm despite spiral of prices of all kinds of clothes that the last year.
Shop owners are selling their commons giving discount and all attractive advertisements Khulna city dwellers are purchasing different type of cloths . They are also buying homemade clothes.
Shop owners told this correspondent that sales were showing an upward trend since the last week.
Khulna New market, Dukbanglow intersection Dukbanglow barobazar, Shahid Suhrawardi market, Khulna Jalil Tower, safe and save, Duckbanglow Moshiur Rahman Super market and Daulatpur market are crowded with people. Besides imitation jewelry fair has been going an in hotel Tiger garden.
Stock has been increased in Khulna markets and sales men were also increased at different markets Salesman of different markets, foot paths makeshift sales centers are passing buys time from morning to mid-night as shopper of all ages are gathering. Their movement has created huge traffic congestion in the major shopping areas in the city. Market sources said, the overall sale was much higher this year.
This correspondent found deployment of law enforcers at different points and market places and engagement of private security man at shopping malls by the authorities concerned have ultimately created a fool-proof security arrangement for business men as well as shoppers.
Azmal Sheikh, owner of Khulna Garments, a grandeur clothes importer said, their selling started after shab-e-barat of course unbearable heat-wave obstructs he added. He said adding that they started to collect Eid clothes four months ago. If Chinese clothes did not come prices of clothes would have gone beyond reaches of common people, he added.
Md Bellal Hossain, Whole seller of cloths of Khulna Barobazar said, varieties of cloths are being sold in our shop. Tania Sultana, a college student came to purchase clothes for her brother and sisters said, varieties of clothes have come this year and prices also have been increased. Three pieces are being sold at Khulna new market at Tk. 4500 to Tk. 35,000, She said Middle class people are gathering of footpaths and make shift shops. Some temporary shops were set of city’s Ferryghat, picture palace and duckbanglow intersection. Ashraful Alam, owners of chandni shares house at Khulna new market said, the products particularly salwar-kameez for girls, shoes, series with embroidery and stone work, Punjabi and shirts produced by local and fashion houses are attracting the customers.
The traders and salesman at different markets including Khulna New Market, Barobazar, Khalishpur Market,Daulatpur Market shopping malls and makeshift road side stalls had already gained momentum.
Sultana Fayezunnesa Ritu, a housewife, resident of Daulatpur Pabla area said, Prices are high this year, despite, we are purchasing cloths for ourselves as well as our children.
Sabbir Hossain, Proprietor of fashion House said, selling of different cloths are good this year, particularly from the first day of the last week of the holy Ramzan.
Sonali Sen, additional deputy police commissioner (ADC, North) of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) told the journalists that security measures were taken with a view to avert any untoward incident. She said adding that both uniformed and plainclothes policemen were deployed at all the markets in the city.
Sylhet Bureau reports: As Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of Muslims, is approaching nearer, tailors of Sylhet are now awfully busy making dresses of ladies, gents, youths, boys and girls for delivering their dresses before the Eid day.
It is learnt, proprietors of the shops are not taking order of making dresses of customers as they will not be able to deliver those before Eid. Most of the customers are disappointed to order their shirts, pants Panjabi and pajamas for Eid celebration.
The proprietors of well established tailoring shops told the Bangladesh Post that they have no sufficient workers and frequent load shedding is hampering their works.
Ahmed Ali, proprietor of Shotorupa Tailors, said he had 15 workers for making dresses but at present 10 workers are working. They are working day and night to deliver all dresses before Eid.
He said, ‘On the occasion of holy Eid, a good number of man turn out to their favorite tailors to place their orders for sewing shirts and pants with good fitting. We are charging Tk 550 for sewing a pant and Tk 350 for sewing a shirt.’
Kamruzzaman Masum, CA of Sylhet Zila Parishad, went to Decent Tailors and asked the proprietor to make a full pant for him but he refused to make it.
On the other hand, readymade garments are ruling in men’s and kids’ collections as usual. But unstitched cloths still enjoy a high demand among women despite there are so many boutique and fashion houses offering readymade clothes. Yasmin Akter, a mother of Modina Market in the city said, ‘I usually buy unstitched clothes after first Ramadan to avoid the last-minute rush at both the fabric stores and tailoring shops. I did most of my shopping from Al Hamra Shopping City, Sylhet city center, Modhubon, Korim Ullah Market and Shukria Market.’
Baby Begum, a student of SUST, has placed order in an embroidery house at Sir Iqbal Road’s shop and said, ‘I preferred embroidered Shalwar-Kameezes with the design of my choice to keep my outfit exclusive.’
Initially most of the well established tailoring shops were taking stitching charge of Tk 250-350 per Kameez set, but with the Eid getting nearer they would go for a sharp hike of stitching charge.
While visiting factories of different tailoring shops at Zindabazar area in the city it was found that the workers were having very busy time in sewing, pressing and packaging garments.
Mustak Ahmed, a young tailor, said that for last few days the work pressure is very high on the occasion of Eid. ‘We have to work from 10:00 am in the morning to till 1:30 am at night restlessly to meet the Eid demand of the customers,’ he added.
Another tailor named Ali Hossain said he has to sew at least five to six pants a day and for that he has to work for extra hours. ‘My target is to earn Tk 20,000 this month to go to my village. This is the peak season for us to earn some extra money, so we don’t mind working for extra time,’ he added.
