S.A. Shofiee, Sylhet :
Buyers are buzzing in the markets of Sylhet city as Eid shopping has gained momentum .
Hasan Market, Modhubhon Market, Shukria Market, Plaza Market, Al-Hamra Market and City Centre in the City have been decorated gorgeously to draw the attention of the customers. The number of buyers is increasing at the shops selling shoes, saris, Punjabi, Shalwar and Kamez.
Indian goods, such as saris, footwear, three-pieces and cosmetics, are being sold at many shops. The tailoring shops have stopped taking orders. Small traders of rural markets set up makeshift shops.
People from all walks of life are seen crowding different markets, shopping malls, business centers and makeshift stores to collect their items of choice. But the high prices of rice, sugar, oil, onion, vegetables and other essential commodities this year have made it hard for the common people to buy the items of their choice.
Shopkeeper Kamrul Islam of Hasan Market says day laborers and the people of low income group normally come to such markets to buy items of their choice at cheep prices. According to the shopkeepers, the number of customers this year is less than that of the previous year.
To ensure safe and hassle free shopping in the markets, the traffic arrangements have been recast on the roads for easy transportation.
Besides the crime busting elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police are vigilant on the road to check mugging, snatching, eve teasing and other unlawful activities.
