Eid shopping is gaining momentum in Narsingdi with the holy Eid-ul-Fitr drawing nearer. People from all walks of life are rushing to the markets of the town to buy items of their choice for their nearest and dearest ones daily.
The shoppers are seen very busy from morning to midnight everyday selling their goods.
The leading super markets, including Islam Plaza, Besal Shopping Center, Noin Tara Plaza, Index Plaza, Hm Plaza and Sharif Manson are decorated with special gates and banners and illuminated to draw the attention of buyers.
The most crowded markets of the town are Noin Tar Plaza, Index Plaza, Sharif Manson, Habib Market, Kalo Miha Market and Monsi Neaz Market where the people of the lower income group are seen very busy purchasing different things like saris, punjabis, children’s dresses, cosmetics and shoes.
Footpaths of the main roads as well as the alleys are also occupied by the hawkers selling various items ahead of the Eid festival.
Swapon Kumar Sarker, owner of Shibani, a cloth shop of the Station Road, said the demand for cotton saris is still high in the markets and it’s easy to sell saris, as their prices do not vary much.
Maksuda Akter, a housewife from Rashulpur, said I purchased a set of three piece dress at Tk 550 from Monsi Neaz Market, but the same piece is sold at different super market shops at Tk 600 to 700.
A good number of boutique shops were set up by woman entrepreneurs in residential areas of the town to sell their handmade products. But they could not yet be able to attract the general customers due to high prices.
Young boys in residential areas of the town have also set up stalls to sell view cards. Boys and girls are buying greeting cards at cheap prices from these stalls.
Sylhet Correspondent reports : With hardly two week is left for the Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, the Sylhet city has been caught by ‘Eid shopping fever’ with modern and traditional shopping malls bustling with shoppers from all walks of life.
Hundreds and thousands of people are seen purchasing items of their own choice with huge enthusiasm despite significant rise in prices of all kinds of clothes than the last year. Movement of
the shoppers has created huge traffic congestion in the major towns.
Shop owners told that sales were showing an upward trend since last couple of days as people especially private and public service holders have already received their Eid bonuses. Salesmen of different markets, footpaths, makeshift sales centers are passing busy time from morning to midnight as people of all ages gathered there to buy their dresses and other items to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, sources added.
Market sources said the overall selling is much higher this year because of further improvement in the economic condition of people of all classes. Businessmen, market association leaders and shoppers highly appreciated the government initiatives for creating favorable trade atmosphere during Ramadan and said they had been doing good business in a secured and safe environment. Deployment of huge police personnel at different strategic city-points and market places, intensive surveillance work by the police and engagement of private security men at shopping malls by the authority concerned have ultimately created a full-proof security arrangement for businessmen as well as shoppers.
We are doing our business very well this year as people seem to be relieved from the sense of insecurity. Even as a businessman, I have not faced any untoward situation relating to law and order from the very first day of Ramadan,” said Motocir Ali, General Secretary of Sylhet Businessmen Association. He said people with their family members are coming for shopping this year even at midnight due to improved law and order. The volume of sale is much higher this year, he added.
Abdur Rahman Ripon, an owner of Apon Shari Ghar at Sylhet Al-Hamra Shopping City said local products particularly Salwar-kameez sets for girls, shoes, sarees with embroidery and stone work, panjabees, shirts and trousers produced by different local fashion houses are attracting the customers. Buyers as well as shoppers said dresses like salwar-kameez, panjabi, saree and other dresses made for children by fashion houses, using the local fabrics and materials, are getting more preferences of the fashion lovers. Similar reports of brisk eid-shopping were also received here from the adjacent districts like Moulobibazar, Hobigong, Sunamgong,Chattak.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Hundreds of people have been thronging different city markets amid huge sales for completing Eid shopping despite higher price even more than two weeks ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity to avoid last moment rush.
According to the market sources, shoppers and local observers, Eid shopping in all of the markets, shopping malls, complexes and makeshift wayside markets marks huge sales since last week amid tight security measures taken in the divisional city.
The district police administration has re-arranged the routes for movements of vehicles, rickshaws, battery-run auto-rickshaws and three-wheelers on the city roads to ensure smooth movements of the shoppers by reducing traffic jam to the minimum.
Members of the law enforcement and intelligence agencies both in uniforms and plain clothes have been patrolling the markets, road traffic and other important places to stop extortion, mugging, burglary and other crimes through stronger vigilance.
Besides, authorities of the business establishments, business organisations, shopping malls, complexes, markets and centres have taken their own security measures to ensure peaceful environment for the shoppers in the city.
