Mostly the lower-income people visit the footpath shops to shop a variety of items ahead of the festival as they can’t afford expensive items in the posh malls.
During visits to different areas of the Sylhet, almost all sorts of items, including garment, crockery, grocery, fruit, stationery, fish, chicken, vegetable, beaten rice, spices, molasses, puffed rice, juice powder were seen available in the footpath shops, comparatively at lower price.
Small vendors have occupied most of the footpaths in Court Point, Bandar bazar, Zindabazar, Kodomtoi and Railway station road of the Sylhet ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Hundreds of stalls have been set up ahead at Court point areas to be the major business hubs for the street vendors and hawkers. Sources said the footpath business sees huge sales every day during the first half of Ramadan, which usually multiplied in the last seven days of the fasting month.
Small vendors have already renovated their shops or built temporary stalls to make some brisk business at a time when the markets are bustling with crowd as shopping is picking up ahead of the festivity.
Farhana Aktar, a housewife, who came at Zindabazar footpath for Eid shopping, said they had to compromise on their Eid shopping due to higher prices of items. She and her husband, a day-labour, had to be satisfied by buying themselves half of the items they earlier had planned to buy.
A Rashid, an employee of a private farm at Bandar area, said the third or fourth-class employees of various government or private offices can do their Eid shopping from these footpath stalls at cheap rates.
However, the street vendors have to pay tolls to local political leaders and law enforcers for getting every tiny slot in footpaths to set up shops.
A street vendor in Zindabazar area told this correspondent that though it is illegal to set up shops on footpaths, they are being allowed to open their stalls by paying money regularly either to local hooligans or petrol police.
Mohibullah, who bought garments from a makeshift shop at Surma Point said ‘We are buying things from these stalls at cheap rates. So I am doing my Eid shopping at the street shop.’
