THE rituals of the annual congregation of Muslims in the holiest city Mecca to perform the religious obligatory have begun with devotion, piety, and cheer that ended into Eid-ul-Azha. The Eid comes to the life of 1.5 billion adherents of Islam when a majority of the followers are undergoing political and economic sanctions in Iran, Turkey, Qatar, and Gaza; in devastating war or sectarian violence in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan and many others; and persecution in Myanmar, China and different parts of the world. As per international news agencies, this year more than two million Muslims from around the globe started the world’s largest annual gatherings Hajj. We greet the Muslims of Bangladesh and across the world in the auspicious occasion of Hajj and Eid of sacrifice.
Every Muslim is required to complete the Hajj journey to Islam’s holiest sites at least once in their lifetime if they are healthy enough and have the means to do so. This year, the Saudis have launched a “smart hajj” initiative, with apps to help pilgrims with everything from travel plans to medical care. For the Muslim faithful, Hajj retraces the last steps of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and also honours the Prophets Ibrahim and Ishmael.
In our country, people will perform the Eid tomorrow (Wednesday) when around 4-5 million animals will be slaughtered. In fact, maintaining cleanliness during Eid-ul-Azha is a yearly challenge. Though animals should be sacrificed in designated areas, it is highly unlikely that most people – being creatures of habit – will heed this advice of keeping clean their own areas; they will probably continue to conduct the sacrifice on the streets and in backyards. Therefore, the authorities must focus their efforts on the removal of waste as soon as possible to prevent the spread of germ. The healthy environment will depend on the timely removal of leftovers from the sacrifice.
Wishing our valued readers, advertisers, patrons and others prosperity and happiness on this happy occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Eid Mubarak!
