The port city of Chittagong still remains caught in Eid hangover although three days have already elapsed after the biggest religious festival of Muslim community.
The city celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr amid with great fanfare and due solemnity with the main Eid congregation taking place at Jamiatul Falah Masjid compound on Saturday.
Expatriate Welfare and Employment Minister Nurul Islam BSc, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasiruddin, former Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, BNP leaders and former Ministers Abdullah Al Noman and Mir Muhammad Nasiruddin, among others, attended the Eid jamaat there.
As most of the city dwellers went to their village home to celebrate the occasion with their relatives, the port city is still wearing a deserted look till filing this report on Tuesday.
Besides, the three-day Eid holiday that began since Friday, ended on Monday; but the public and private offices were seen starting their working day from Tuesday as officials started attending from Tuesday.
Hence, the holiday spree is still on in the port city, as most of its dwellers are yet to return to their city residences.
The city-streets also looked vacant with a few locals visiting their relatives’ houses in the city. From today, the city-dwellers who went to their village home to observe the festival had already started to return in the city. Almost all the shopping malls and kitchen markets are still remained closed as the employees and the shop-owners are enjoying weeklong holiday since the morning of Eid.
About 60 to 70 per cent city-dwellers are outsiders from the village. Almost all of them go to their village homes particularly during the Eid season. Only the permanent residents of the city remained to observe the festival here.
During the Eid day and the following days of the festival, the tourist spots of the city including Foy’s Lake, Chittagong Zoo, Children Park and the Patenga Sea Beach remained full of visitors who are interested enjoying the holiday with their family members.
