Eid festivity in poverty-prone areas after combating ‘monga’

In place of fighting against extreme poverty, the common people are preparing for celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity this time after combating ‘monga’ in poverty-prone areas of Rangpur division.
It became possible following eradication of the seasonal joblessness situation of ‘monga’ permanently by the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina setting up a dazzling example of combating extreme poverty.
The seasonal phenomenon ‘monga’ has factually become a historical term following massive government interventions improving socioeconomic conditions of the poorer section people to free them from the decades-old curse of extreme poverty.
According to experts, NGO executives, public representatives and officials, the poor have been passing lean periods during the past eight years without experiencing any bite of seasonal ‘monga’ to lead normal life with a dream of brighter future for their children. Overcoming miseries of ‘monga’ and improving socioeconomic conditions, the poorer section people are now purchasing clothes, vermicelli and other Eid items for their family members to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festivity.
Head of Programme Coordination of RDRS Bangladesh Monjusree Saha said the poor are ready to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity after combating ‘monga’ following successful implementation of the government’s social safety net programmes.
“The easy-term and interest-free loans, allowances, training for unemployed male and female youths for income generations, assistance of government, NGOs, donor agencies and development partners played important roles in eradicating ‘monga’,” she added Executive Director of Northbengal Institute of Development Studies Dr Syed Samsuzzaman said life standard of the poor has improved because of their engagements with various income generating activities. “The poor have been celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity this year following decisive political will and effective steps taken by the present government in eradicating the seasonal curse permanently during the past eight years,” Dr Zaman said.
Valiant freedom fighter Akbar Hossain and cultural activist Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu said the poor have changed fortune through small-scale enterprises, cottage industries, sewing garments, waving, homestead farming, pisciculture, rearing poultry birds, animals and other ventures. Adviser- Agriculture of BRAC International (South Asia and Africa) Dr MA Mazid said expanded cultivation and early harvest of the short duration rice varieties during lean periods adopting newer cropping patterns has played key role in ‘monga’ eradication.
“The farm-labourers get adequate jobs in crop fields following large-scale farming and harvest of short duration Aman rice throughout the peak ‘monga’ periods to earn better livelihoods,” he added. District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer of Rangpur Faridul Haque said the government implements employment generation programmes and provides allowances, VGF, VGD, TR and FFW under comprehensive social safety- net programmes eradicating monga.’
“As a result of successful implementation of social safety- net programmes, the poor do not experience any ‘monga’ following improvement of socioeconomic condition and life standard and they are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr festivity,” he said.
Legendary freedom fighter Taramon Bibi, Bir Pratik said the poor have been enjoying the fruit of hard-earned independence as none of them, including those living in poverty- prone char areas, had to stave in recent times.
She thanked Bangabandhu’s daughter and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for turning her words true through freeing the poverty-prone people of Rangpur region from extreme poverty by eradicating monga permanently. “It makes me happy when I see the poor are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr festivity and their children going to the schools following huge change in socioeconomic condition though they had to live under abject poverty even a decade ago,” she said.
Chilmari upazila chairman Shawkat Ali Sarker, Bir Bikram, said economic condition of the common people has improved during the past eight years in the region where the poor lived amid abject poverty with their family members even a decade ago.
Chairman of local Nohali union under Gangachara upazila in Rangpur Abul Kalam Azad Titul said the poor have been celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity in poverty-prone areas with enthusiasm this time following improvement of socioeconomic conditions.
