Eid brings no joy to Sylhet flood-hit people

Thousands of flood-hit families in Sylhet failed to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha as the recent flood has rendered them homeless.
According to the Sylhet divisional commissioner office, 43,315 flood victims were staying in 653 flood shelter in four districts under the division still Tuesday.
Tahirpur upazila resident Rashid Ali in Sunamganj told that, ‘Eid did not bring me any joy as others, who were living in shelter for around a month.’
According to the district administration, till Tuesday around 10,000 out of over 15,00,000 flood-affected people in Sunamganj did not move from shelter though water level of major rivers marked a significant fall.
Either their houses were damaged partially or completely in the flooding or remained covered with knee-deep mud, it said, adding that the victims won’t be able to repair their dwellings without the government support.
Sunamganj deputy commission Zahangir Alam said that apart from regular grant from the government for the flood-affected families, a Tk 5 crore had been sanctioned from the prime minister’ welfare fund to support 5,000 families that lost their houses.
 ‘Efforts to make a list of families who lost their houses in recent flood are underway,’ he added.
According to Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Mojibar Rahman, they were trying their best to stand by the flood-affected families who were yet to return home.
 ‘Apart from distributing special food items like shemai, milk, sugar and flour among the victims, we have also given them meat of sacrificial animals on the Eid day,’ he added.
According to the divisional administration, more than 70 lakh people in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar were affected by the recent flooding.
They government has so far allotted Tk 10 crore for 10,000 families in Sylhet and Sunamganj district, it said.
BSS adds: The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre recorded a fall in water level at 80 stations.
Among the 109 monitored river stations, three have been registered steady and water level at all river stations is flowing below the danger level, it said.
All major rivers across the country are in falling trend which may continue in the next 72 hours.
There is no risk of flood in the major river basins of the country in the next five days, added the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.
A significant rainfall was recorded at some stations in different districts during the past 24 hours ending at 9:00am Tuesday, it said.
