UNB, Dhaka :
A fair offering eggs at Tk 3 per piece turned chaotic as thousands of people thronged the venue at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the city’s Khamarbari area on Friday morning.
Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) in association with the Department of Livestock Services organised the fair marking the World Egg Day.
The fair offered eggs at Tk 3 per piece and one person was allowed to buy maximum 90 eggs. The sale was scheduled to continue from 10am to 1pm.
The organisers published advertisements in newspapers and opened a Facebook event on the sale to attract people. To avail themselves of eggs at such a low price, thousands of people started to gather at the venue since the morning.
As the egg supplies were exhausted within half an hour, the organisers called off the fair, much to the anger of the people who stood in a long queue to collect eggs. The angry mob vandalised makeshift shops at the fair venue and destroyed many eggs. Later, police charged batons on them to bring the situation under control.
