Effective social movement against drug abuse underscored

The initiation of an effective social movement against drug abuse has become crucial to protect the young generation from its dire consequences.
The observation came on Monday at a seminar on “Preparing a comprehensive action plan through creating a social revolution to resist drug abuse” held at Pirganj upazila parishad auditorium in Rangpur district. With the assistance of the Department of Narcotics Control, the upazila administration organised the event aiming at discussing and working out suggestions, ways and means for a comprehensive action plan to create a social movement against drug abuse.
Government officials, politicians, grassroots’ level public representatives, Imams, teachers, professionals and civil society members participated in the event.
Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Biroda Rani Roy presided over the seminar moderated by Upazila Primary Education Officer Md. Rafikuzzaman, reports BSS.Vice-Chairman of Pirganj Upazila Parishad Shafiur Rahman Mondal Milan, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mir Md Al Kamah Tomal, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pirganj Thana Mahbubur Rahman, President of Upazila Awami League Nurul Amin Raja, among others, spoke.
Expressing concern over the drug abuse situation, the speakers urged all stakeholders to come forward and work together to resist drug abuse. OC Mahbubur Rahman said the government has taken a zero tolerance stand against drug abuse to protect young generations from the clutches of drug addiction that also leads them towards committing social crimes. Nurul Amin Raja stressed on creating mass public awareness about drug abuse and its grave consequences to eliminate the social disease on the way to build a healthy society and achieve sustainable development goals. The UNO called for turning the movement against drugs into an effective social movement involving all stakeholders to free the society from abuse of drugs, its illicit trafficking and business for protecting young generations from dire consequences.
