All the educational institutions in the country will be reopened anytime this month. The decision to reopen the educational institutions will be taken after holding a meeting with the national technical advisory committee on Covid-19.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said this while responding to a question from reporters after the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected chairmen at the Chandpur deputy commissioner’s office on Wednesday afternoon.
“A meeting of the national technical advisory committee on Covid-19 is scheduled to be held Wednesday night to review the country’s corona situation. If the decision is taken to reopen the educational institutions, health guidelines should be followed strictly considering the coronavirus pandemic,” the minister said. Dipu Moni, however, didn’t specify the date for opening the educational institutions,
but she assured that the institutions will be opened by this month.
Regarding classroom teaching, the minister said, “We will do our best to take as many classes as possible considering the situation.”
The ministry will hold a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the matter afterward.
After more than a year and a half of closure amid the coronavirus pandemic, Bangladesh reopened schools in September 2021.
Later, universities gradually returned to in-person classes as well.
But with the onset of the highly-infectious omicron strain of the coronavirus, cases began trending up since the start of 2022.
In light of the soaring caseload, the government closed educational institutions on January 21.
At the time, the education minister said the decision was prompted by an increase in coronavirus infections among children.
Initially, the plan was to keep schools closed until February 6, but as the situation had not been improved by then, the curbs on in-person learning and public gatherings were extended to February 21.
