UNB, Dhaka :
Noted jurist Barrister M Amirul Islam here on Sunday said more attention should be given to the country’s education sector to maintain the upsurge of development.
“Supporters, followers and well-wishers should strengthen the hands of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina so that she can bring radical change in the country’s existing education process,” he told an Iftar party arranged by Bangabandhu Parishad in the city’s Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh-IDEB.
The senior lawyer said there is a little bit tension about the future growth of Bangladesh as the
management of education sector is underway. “If the government fails to manage the sector properly, the future would not be better.”
Bangladesh has become a global role model for its rapid development in almost all the sectors, he said, adding that the country is advancing fast because of the well-organised leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s capable daughter Sheikh Hasina.
Disagreeing with Amirul Islam over his remarks on the education sector, former University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Dr AK Azad Chowdhury said the education sector of Bangladesh is developing swiftly. For instance, he said, whereas there were 11 lakh students at university level in 2008, currently the number stands at 30 lakh.
He also said the Prime Minister has announced that the government will establish at least one public university at every district while private universities will also get permission in all the districts.
Referring to the recent jump of Bangladesh in the world peace index, he said it will be the example of peace, prosperity and secularism in the map of earth.
Former Buet Pro Vice-chancellor M Habibur Rahman, Bangabandhu Parishad general secretary SA Malek, Dhaka University teachers Shafiul Islam Bhuiyan, Prof Akhtaruzzaman and ABM Faruk, and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) general secretary Kuddus Afrad also spoke at the programme.
