EC’s letter to finalise 40,000 polling centres

As part of the preparatory work for the eleven parliamentary elections, the Election Commission (EC) has sent letter to the field level administrations directing them to publish the draft lists of the voting centres by August 5.
The letter, signed by EC Secretariat Assistant Secretary Raushan Ara Begum, was sent to district and upazila election officials on Thursday. In the letter, the field level administrations have been asked to settle any objection by September 6 if anyone has any objection regarding the proposed centres.
According to the rules, the final list of polling centres will be published 25 days before the announcement of the schedule.
Joint Secretary of the Commission Secretariat (Current Affairs) Abul Kashem said this to reporters in the city yesterday.
The letter said the number of possible polling centres in the coming parliamentary elections will be 40,000. Of them, 39,387 will be for the plain lands while 613 for the hilly areas.
According to the voting centre policy, there will be a polling station for 2,500 voters while on an average there will be a polling room for 600 male voters and 500 female voters. At present, there are 10 crore 41 lakh 42 thousand and 381 voters in the country.  
During the parliamentary elections held on January 5, 2014, there were 9 crore 19 lakh 65 thousand and 167 voters. There were 37,707 polling stations and one lakh 89 thousand 78 voting rooms for the voters.
According to the constitution, the current parliament will expire on January 28 next year. Elections should be held within 90 days before the expiry of the parliament.
Accordingly, the parliamentary elections will be held between October 31 and January 28, 2019. And the EC has started preparatory work. The concerned division has already been instructed to prepare the CD of the voter lists.
For this parliamentary election, an allocation of Tk 1,895 crore has been kept in for the current budget.
