Economic freedom remains hidden in cooperative movement

Speakers at a post-rally discussion here have said the right way of achieving sustainable economic freedom and self-reliance by the poor remains hidden in strengthening of the cooperative movement at the grassroots levels.
They put emphasis on launching effective cooperative movement in all sectors including agriculture and small and small-scale enterprise through forming own capital, creating efficient leadership and employments to increase food production and alleviate poverty.
They were addressing the discussion organised here in observance of the 43rd National Cooperative Day-2014 by the Cooperatives Division and different Cooperatives Organisations at Zila Parishad community centre in the city on Saturday afternoon.
Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) and valiant freedom fighter Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmmed Jhantu attended and addressed the function as the chief guest with District Transports Owners’ Cooperatives Society AKM Azizul Islam in the chair.
Earlier, a huge colourful procession, participated by officials and employees of different government departments, leaders and activists of cooperative organisations, socio-cultural activists, civil society members and local elite, paraded the city streets.
Joint Registrar of Rangpur Divisional Cooperative Office Mohammad Akhteruzzaman, District Cooperative Officer Abdul Wahed, President of Rangpur unit of Awami League Shafiar Rahman Shafi, addressed as the special guests.
General Secretary of District Workers’-Employees’ Savings and Loan Distribution Cooperative Society Mazharul Islam Mantu, Executive of Fareast Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited Mahfuz Alam Prince and Executive of Usha Cooperative Society Shah Alam also spoke.
The speakers stressed for establishing good governance in the cooperative concept that could unite the poorer section people and marginal farmers to enhance productivities in all rural sectors to eradicate poverty in building a developed Bangladesh.
The chief guest called for strengthening cooperative movements at the grassroots, enhancing cooperative loan schemes for small and marginal farmers, entrepreneurs and other backwards sections in the society.
He urged the officials concerned and members of cooperative societies for making the cooperative movement successful ensuring transparency and developing human resources to enhance productivities for building poverty and hunger free developed nation.
He also stressed for properly utilising the allocations being provided by the present government to accelerate rural uplift in building poverty, exploitation and hunger-free Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
