A two day national conference styled ‘Towards the Promotion of Eco-Tourism in the Sundarbans Ecosystem, Bangladesh’ began Saturday at CSS Ava Centre at Rupsha area in the city.
Centre for Integrated Studies on the Sundarbans of Khulna University organised the conference with assistance of the Forest Department and the World Bank.
The inaugural session of the conference was chaired by Divisional Forest Officer of West Sundarban Zahir Uddin Ahmed while deputy commissioner of Khulna Mostofa Kamal addressed as chief guest.
Head of Environment Science Discipline of KU Professor Dr Kazi Zahangir Hossain, Police Super Md Habibur Rahman and Director of Directorate of Environment (DoE) in Khulna Division Dr Mallick Anwar Hossain addressed the conference.
Professor Dr Salma Banu, principal investigator for eco-tourism centre in the Sundarbans of Khulna University delivered the speech of welcome.
Earlier, the chief guest also inaugurated a website to avail tourism facilities. The website is www.sundarbansecotourism_bfd.gov.bd
The speakers said the website would play vital role for flourishing eco tourism in Sunderbans and to enhance government revenue earnings.
There is much possibility to flourish eco tourism with the help of Sundarbans and everybody should help to protect the forest not only for livelihood, but also to protect biodiversity, they said.
