BSS, Dhaka :
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) Tuesday approved nine development projects with a outlay of Taka 5,868 crore including the revision of rail track installation from Khulna to Mongla project.
The revised cost of the project, under the Indian line of Credit (ILoC), now stands at Taka 3,801 crore. Under the project, a total of 65km broad gauge railway-track along with 21km loop line would be set up from Khulna to Mongla port.
The approval came at the 29th meeting of the ECNEC in this fiscal held at the NEC Conference room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal briefed the newsmen about the outcomes of the meeting. He said the nine projects would require a total cost of Taka 5,868 crore.
“Of the total project cost, the government will provide Taka 2,270 crore from the national exchequer while Taka 3,567 crore would come as project assistance and the organization concerned will contribute Taka 30.94 crore from own fund,” added Kamal.
Explaining the reason for the additional cost of the Khulna-Mongla rail track project, the planning minister said a 717-metre long rail bridge has to be constructed over the Rupsha River due to change of the alignment of the rail route.
“The alignment change has increased the length of the rail route by 12km along with more land acquisition, which will require an additional cost of Taka 2,200 crore,” he informed.
The original project cost was Taka 1,721 crore during the ECNEC approval first time in December 2010.
Besides, the ECNEC approved rehabilitation project for the Kulaura-Shahbajpur rail track in Moulavibazar with Taka 678 crore as the government has decided to reopen the route.
The government will provide Taka 122 crore for the project while the remaining Taka 556 crore will come from the ILoC.
Under the project, the government has plan to expand the 51km long route to the Indian boarder by setting up addition 9km rail track and convert the track into dual-gauge to connect regional railway network as well as Trans-Asian railway network in future.
